So I Took Heir No. One To The Movies Last Weekend

It was hot outside. Cool in the theatre, and he and I think the Clone Troopers rock like Elvis when he was young and cool.

If you simply take it for what it is, that is to say, a cartoon, it is fun. The guy in the center, he's Captain Rex. I took a real shine to Captain Rex. In addition to being Anakin Skywalker's right hand man, he was a professional through and through. Never whining, never complaining. When the odds were bad, and his troops were getting their asses kicked, he simply manned up, and kept shooting. When Skywalker and his padawan had to bail on him, leaving him out numbered and facing annihilation, his response to the bad news? "I understand sir. The mission comes first." Out-freaking-standing. I made sure the Heir caught that.

An American Creation.

I watched IRON MAN yesterday. Freakin excellent, thanks for asking.

I sat and thought about it after and it came to me. The superhero is a uniquely American invention.

Really. I used to collect comic books years ago. Part of that phase of my life was understanding the history as well as the artists. (yes, I can look at it and know if it was drawn by Joe Kubert, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Gene Colan, Sal Buscema, Neal Adams, and others), and yes, we did it first, as long as you discount some of Nitsche's writings.

And we developed it. From the larger-than-life such as Superman, to Marvel's stamp on the superhero, which was to make them human...people with messy relationships, rent to pay, etc.

Which had me thinking...who might they make a movie of yet? The characters they have so far: The Fantastic Four, Spiderman, The Hulk, the X Men, and now, Iron Man. Teams are obvious choices: The Avengers, The Defenders, The Champions, Alpha Flight, The Invaders, but the characters? Doctor Strange, and Captain America come to mind. Maybe the Sub Mariner. Moon Knight? Rom? Omega?

So many opportunities. And that's just Marvel. I'd pay to see Green Lantern...Hal Jordan, of course.

I Watched the Iron Man preview earlier this week.

I take back my snarky remarks about an addict playing an addict. Robert Downey Jr. sooo nailed Tony Stark. And Cuba Gooding Jr. as Rhodie.

Oh yeah. I WILL be seeing this in the theatre.

Stayed up too late last night watching a movie...

The Fountainhead-Gary Cooper, Patricia Neal. Good story, great cinematography. The Mrs. and I had a quiet couple of hours watching it. I recommend it.
